What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a very old art that has been making a significant come back for seekers who long to be more spiritually connected.  While there are many ways to find ones authentic self and purpose, this ancient path is often sought when external circumstances cause seekers to question their previous beliefs and values yet struggle to navigate a path forward.  A spiritual director bears witness to a persons life with a mirror deeply rooted in love, compassion and truth.  Questions such as, “Who am I?”, “What is my purpose?” and “Who is God?”, are common for people who seek a spiritual director.  This is the most profound search anyone could ever engage because it is like coming home to yourself where you have belonged all along; to where you are most fully alive. A spiritual director is equipped to help you become more present to your most authentic self by accessing the points of connection to your inherent place of belonging, where divine mystery dwells.

Whether you know it or not, you are constantly being guided in the most ordinary ways to extraordinary awareness. This is where spiritual direction makes a hospitable place for your soul on the path of finding the preciousness of who you are in your experience as a human being.  It is about honing a way to remain on this genuine search through whatever particular way you connect to the world, yourself, God and others while in the midst of whatever circumstances you find yourself in. It is not through order or certainty that we seek out a person to accompany us in life, rather it is more often through chaos, suffering and the unknown that we find that which is seeking us.

This is what many of the spiritual wisdom teachers from every faith tradition have called the contemplative path, extending a further reach into your soul beyond rigid religion and the wooden confines of institutions. Here, there is a qualitative sensitivity to yourself as you seek to find it in the sacred place of things.
